The Camp focuses on STEM activities and promotes creativity based activities to enrich science and math.  Last year 1,200 schools across the nation chose to partner with Camp Invention.  Check out the website for more information or to register.

Camp Invention

The National Science Resources Center has received an i3 (Investing in Innovation) award from the Dept. of Education to conduct a validation of its Leadership and Assistance for Science Education Reform (LASER) Model. This model employs a systems approach based on research and best practices that systematically reforms schools to implement high quality science education in K-8, which leads to positive outcomes in student achievement. This i3 award is a five year research study that will involve students in elementary and middle schools from districts in three locations-New Mexico, Houston,TX and North Carolina. We are excited that two schools in McDowell County; West Marion Elementary and Old Fort Elementary were chosen to participate in this research study. Our science classrooms will be focused on inquiry based learning which is a student-centered and teacher-guided instructional approach that engages students in investigating real world questions within a broad thematic framework. Students acquire and analyze information, develop ideas, provide solutions, and design technology and art products that demonstrate their thinking and make their learning visible. Some of the skills that students will gain are problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-directed learning. We will keep you posted on our website and through newsletters about Science education.
